Stop Spam : Best Practice in Email
Spam Prevention and Eradication

How you can help stop spam:

  • Ensure that you have anti virus, anti spyware and firewall software installed on all computers and that you keep the the updates current at all times. Likewise, ensure that all security updates for your operating system, web browser and other "at risk" software applications are installed and kept current at all times.
  • Never respond directly to a spammer - not even to "unsubscribe". (That only confirms that you have an active email address, raising your likelihood of receiving ever more spam. In most cases, though, spammers use faked email reply addresses anyway, meaning that your complaint will either never been seen or be received by a totally unaware and innocent party.) Boycott spammers. Refuse to do business with known spammers or "spam friendly" businesses.
  • Never delete a spam. Learn how to trace spams and lodge abuse reports. Never let a spam go unreported to every possible relevant source (other than the spammer him/herself). Our Links Page contains references to a number of valuable tutorials to assist you trace the source of spams and lodge abuse reports.
  • With each abuse report you lodge, ask the company/person to whom you are lodging your abuse report - anywhere in the world - these two questions:
    • Are you supportive of the "Best Practice in Email Spam Prevention and Eradication" initiative espoused by http://www.bestprac.org?
    • If so, do you comply with the Principles of Best Practice applicable to your type of service?
  • Ask your CURRENT internet & web services providers (of all types - in all countries) those same questions. (It may help you to recognize if you are supporting a "spam friendly" company with your business.)
  • Before you join or sign up for any NEW services online, no matter where in the world they are based, ask these same two questions, too. (Asking may help you avoid becoming involved with "spam friendly" companies. By asking, you will also be helping to publicize the Best Practice initiatives and encourage their usage.)
